Project 1:
CASE STUDY
identifying innovative passive design strategies
In groups of 7, we were required to choose a green building from Malaysia and Singapore and conduct a passive design analysis on the buildings. We chose to study the Digi Technology Operations Centre in Malaysia and the City Square Mall in Singapore. We were to produce a report based on these strategies and conclude it. Some of the fields we had to cover were sloar radiation, thermal mass, insulation and ventilation. Through this project, I was able to identify the environmental conditions related to the site and explain the effects of the sun on the thermal performance of the building. I am also able to explain the effects of insulation, thermal mass and air movement on the performance of the respective buildings. I am now aware of the different passive design strategies and am able to apply them in my designs appropriately.

Building Science 1
This module mainly focused on introducing us to the ideas of passive design strategies based o nthe three tiers of design. We were also exposed to the calculations of heat gain in buildings in order to respond appropriately to the site and design. Through this module, I was able to identify and define the principles of heat transfer in relation to the buildings and people as well as understand the idea of thermal comfort and its requirements in the Malaysian context. I am also able to criticize a design of a space in terms of thermal comfrot by referring to the MS1525, UBBL, GBI and Green Mark standards.
