This module aims to introduce us to basic architectural theories through intentions, concepts, patterns and architectural language as well as contextual relationships. Besides that, it is to enable us to look at the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors that have influenced architectural design. After completing this module, I am able to recognize the proper architectural vocabulary when referring to a building’s type, style and period. I can also identify the sequence of historical periods and their architectural representations. I am also able to analyze buildings, which document intentions, concepts, patters, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.

Project:
Precedent Study
[Essay]

 

​​In groups of 4, we were required to select and architectural period and its relevant building to conduct a precedent study on. My group chose to study the Gothic architectural period with Elizabeth Tower, Palace of Westminster as our main focus. Firstly, we were to communicate relevant information to the precedent study through a 500-word essay based on the chosen building. Through this component of the precedent study, I was able to recognize and use the appropriate terminologies. I was also able to select the most important information in the precedent study. My knowledge of the Gothic Architectural period has also been improved tremendously.

Individually, we were required to produce a presentation board in relevance to our precedent study. The presentation board was to be strictly hand drawn and hand written. After completing this assignment, I am able to understand the components in precedent studies in detail. Besides that I am able to conduct a building analysis in terms of document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships. This assignment also taught me how to present my information in a clear and systematic manner.

The final component of the precedent study was a group project that required us to produce a model of our chosen building that communicates the important structures, components, ideas and concepts of our precedent studies. Once the model is complete, we were required to verbally present our work. After completing this assignment, I realized how important details are in architecture in order to communicate your ideas. I also realized the importance of teamwork in such an assignment. Besides that, I clearly understand the importance of proper architectural vocabulary when referring to a building’s style, types and architectural period.
