This module aims to introduce us to the understanding of structural systems as part of construction technology and enable us to visualize the structural's loading and reactions and quantify these loads through simple mathematical analysis. Through this module, I am now able to identify the structural systems and forces as well as apply the basic principles of soil mechanics. I am also able to apply structural theories in the design phase and analyse the loading calculations using simple mathematical calculations. Finally, I am able to illustrate these manipulation of forces and appraise the technical standards of structural design codes and loading codes.

Project 1:
Fettuccine Truss Bridge

In groups of 5, we were required to carry out a precedent study of a truss bridge and using the information collected, we were to design and construct our own fettuccine bridge with a 750mm clear span and a maximum weight of 200g and the bridge would be tested to fail. Once that is done, the efficiency of the bridge will be calculated. The failed bridge would then have to be analysed in terms of the structural analysis, critical members has to be identified and the members would have to be strengthened. An A4 report would have to be produced consisting of all these information. Individually, we were required to calculate one of 6 trusses and analyse them. Through this assignment, I am now able to evaluate, explore and improve the different attributes of construction materials. I am also able to apply my understanding of load distribution in a truss as well as identify the members that are in tension or compression. FInally, I am able to explore the different arrangement of members in a structure.

Project 2:
Extension of a R.C. Bungalow

In groups of 8, we were required to select a bungalow of 2 or 3 storeys and carry out structural framing for the building and prepare the required structural drawings including the foundation plan, ground floor plna, first floor plan and roof plan. We were then required to create subgroups of 2 members and propose an extension of the bungalow that shouldn't exceed 30% of the existing floor areas and should be 2 storeys. We were then required to frame the extension and identify and quantify the loads acting on the structure. Individually, we were to select a minimum of 6 beams and 4 columns to be analysed and quantified. All these information were then to be compiled in an A4 report. Through this assignment, I am now able to produce a complete documentation of a structural system of a case study and explore and understand the concept of structural analysis. Finally, I am able to identify the structural components as well as recognize, execute and implement basic procedures of building structural design.
