This module aims to allow us to develop critical perspectives on architecture and urbanism in situations where tradition, modernity and globalization intersect through an exploration of the history of South Asian, Southeast Asian, and East Asian architecture. It also aims to provide the tools required for the analysis of specific architectural situation that inform third year studio designs. Finally, it aims to enable us to analyse the different architectural languages and issues based on cross cultural awareness. Through this module, I am able to describe the historical development of the main strands of Asian Architecture as well as identify the issues related to the historical and chronological transitions of asian architectural history. I am now able to interpret the languages in relation to the development of asian architecture and urbanism. Finally, I am able to produce, orally and in writing, a critical interpretation of Asian Architecture and urbanism in relation to the issues concerning contemporary architectural design.

Asian Architecture

Project 1:
Case Study Paper

Individually, we were required to produce a research paper on Belum Rainforest Resort based on several research areas. I chose to study Nature and Architecture. Once the research area was chosen, we were then required to conduct an investigation through observation and readings on the chosen building. Finally, we were to produce an A4 research report based on a title that we'v generated in relation to the topic chosen as well as present the outline of our research orally. Through this assignment, I am able to analyse and discuss the selected research area that I have chosen as well as identify the significant elements of sustainable design through a thorough investigation of Belum Rainforest Resort. Finally, I am able to produce a paper of 3000 to 4000 words as well as present my research finding in a clear and concise manner.

Project 2:
Documentation Study

In groupd of 5, we were required to indentify a site, we chose Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, and we were to identify and capture the architectural elements that constitute as the symbols, visuals of the semiotic interpretation of the street or its iconography. We were then requried to produce an A4 photobook in relation to a theme or concept and a written summary was to be inserted into the book. Finally, an A2 map documenting the significant landmarks or elements was to be produced as well. Through this assignment, my ability to interpret symbolism architecturally has improved tremendously. Besides that, I am now able to describe the historical development of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman based on the main strands of Asian Architecture. I am also able to interpret the architectural languages in relation to the development of asian architecture and urbanism based on tradition, modernity and globalization.
