Building Materials

This module aims to introduce us to the various types of building materials that are being used in the current construction practice. It is also to create an understanding of the choices made in choosing the appropriate building materials based on their respective properties. After undergoing this entire module, I am now aware of the basic form of materials and their respective properties and how they affect the space. I am also aware of the standard construction names and terminologies for the materials in a space or a building. Besides that through this module, I have learned to state the appropriate characteristics of the materials depending on the space it is being used in.
Project 1A:
My Home My Space
This assignment required us to produce a presentation board stating five materials that are being used in our homes. These materials would have to consist of finishes, furnishing and structural components. We were then required to state their respective characteristics based on their chemical and physical properties. After undergoing this assignment I am able to identify the different types of materials that are used in construction, finishes and furnishings as well as their respective characteristics. I am also able to describe the general usage of these materials and document them in a systematic and appropriate manner.
Project 1B:
Materiality of a Space
[An Experiential Exploration]
In groups of five, this assignment required us to select a commercial or a residential building which allows us to experience and explore most of the building materials that are covered in the module. We chose to study Kevin Mark Low’s Safari Roof House. We were to produce two A2 presentation boards stating the materials used and their properties as well as a Mood Board to reflect the ambience of the space. Individually, we were to create a presentation board that analyzes the experiential properties of the materials used as well as how they are constructed. After undergoing this assignment, I am able to produce a complete documentation as well as analysis of the materials and I am able to understand the effects of these materials on aesthetics and structural qualities. I am also able to understand the applications of these materials as well as state their respective properties.

Project Integration:
Design Studio 1
Our final assignment is an integration project with our final project for Architecture Design Studio 1. We were required to produce a presentation board on our selection of materials from our design. This was to contain their respective physical and chemical properties as well as their construction. After completing this assignment, I now realize the importance of selecting the right materials in order to accentuate the space. I am also able to apply my understanding of the various types of building materials that affects the tactile and chemical properties of a building. My understanding of the effects of building materials in terms of aesthetic and structural qualities has also improved tremendously through this assignment.
